I got mine through the winter this way by putting 2 x 300 watt heaters with air stones in the tank for a 300 gallon tank. Shut the pumps off after 11pm and turned them on at 10 am. Fed lightly in the morning if temps weren't too bad otherwise did not feed at all while getting them through winter. This would only be worthwhile if you needed to get them through the winter to continue growing for another season. You will want some type of aquatic plant that will uptake ammonia directly. Duckweed and azolla work ok.

My tank is running about 86F/30C. The water hose stretched out in the sun and my home made solar heater are working pretty good. Water temp was 68F/20C before I set up the solar heaters.

Setting your system up so that you can isolate the grow beds is the better way to go.

It's an IBC FT but I do have a 15/lt/min air stone in there to help out, maybe not enough to get them through overnight without the pump though.

Shutting the pumps off an night is where the filtration vs not filtered really shows up. In non filtered system you will see a bigger ammonia spike.

I see this now, post completing my first system. Ststem No 2 and 3 will be up in the next few months along the lines of filtration and growbed separation for those cool winter nights....

    Hi,

I lost one of my jade perch last night. It weighed 400g. I'd be prepared to bet that it died from thermal stress.

Guess who's harvesting fish this weekend?

    And considerably reduced oxygen levels.

    Hi,

The cold weather descended on us this week......quite suddenly.

Early this week, we recorded early morning ambient temperatures of 0.9oC.....with 10oC in the shed.....and 14oC in the fish tanks.
