    Sleepy cod

Just bit the bullet and purchased 50 sleepy cod from Ausyfish. They have a limited amount at 15 cm for $2.86 each. The only problem is that they are not weaned. I am mixing blood worms with the sinking pellets to get then started. So far they are a bit timid going for the food but hunger should eventually do the rest.

Also have about 120 jades, 50 silvers, 25 golden perch, 21 eel tailed catfish and 90 + murray cod. (and possibly a bewildered wife)

Good one on the Sleepies Jonty..... I should get some more while he still has some.
They are a great fish.....my first batch is now 20 months old.
They are more than a 2 year grow out I reckon....although some of my bigger ones must now be almost 300g I should catch a couple and weigh them just to see.

Just went out and caught 3 to weigh and get an average weight

Average is 280 g....one of the three was a fair bit smaller than the other two so I would be prepared to say the bigger ones would be around 325 -350 g

They have a long way to go to get to 7 o 8 hundred G let alone 1kg. All the reading material says 2 year grow out...so I don't know where they get that from.
My sleepies all feed well and are healthy. The only losses I have had are from jumpers....so I have the feeling that they might be a 3 year project.

But once you get the cycle going........I have another batch that are about 8 months old...so I should start another batch off about now and if my plan is correct, in about another year I should have a continuous supply of sleepies of eating size as each batch reaches around 2.5 to 3 years old..

    All worthwhile projects take time.

Not really worried about the time to get them to edible size. As long as I can keep picking the veggies and the occasional feed of fish I am happy.

    Hi
Can I put sleepy cod in the same tank as silver perch?

I think the cod would like the silvers. They like live food. Only way to mix cod is if the other fish are a lot bigger. And they will still hassle them.

I bought 50 sleepies from Childers last week. They arrived safe and I put them in the fingerling tank on arrival.

I had heard they were jumpers so I covered the tank with some off cut board I had. Unfortunately I left some small, 50mm, gaps.

Came out one morning and one was on the ground and past resusitation. The next day I looked behind my tank and there was a dozen on the ground dead. They got through a very small gap I overlooked.

Two jumped into my FT where silvers and jades live. The larger silvers and jades, 250mm, took the eyes out of the sleepies and bit their sides severely. They died as well. Obviously sp jp and sleepies don't mix

These sleepies will be a challenge i think.

    Re: Sleepy cod

Hi Sunshine, sorry to hear about the sleepies. They are jumpers that is for sure. I got 100 about 6 months ago and I have only about 20 left for all the same reasons. I should have known better because I have some that are now 20 months old and doing well. I have 160 of those and I have not lost any of them to jumping because I have them in two lidded tanks.

I have one that is in sick bay at the moment with big chunks taken out of him, maybe a fight I do not know, but he looks like he might make it...I hope so.

Thats useful information to know. We need a separate fish characteristics thread put up so people buying a particular breed of fish can read up about them and not make the same mistakes.
Murray I wonder if your Hardwood Kiddie Cover is good enough to prevent small jumping sleepies from getting through the gaps in the timber slats?

Actually Castaway the small sleepies jumped out through the cutaway we have for a finger grip which is 50 x 70mm in size.
You would wonder how the little fish can take aim and jump right through.

I now cover the finger hold over with a small piece of plywood.

Found that problem on the first day my sleepies arrived. Put them in the fingerling tank and came back about 10 minutes later. 3 were on the ground. Put them back in the tank and they were okay. I partially cover mine with foam blocks with weights and use flyscreen mesh pegged over the remainder of the tank. No deaths to date.
