Natural World - A farm for the future.

Wildlife film maker Rebecca Hosking investigates how to transform her family's farm in Devon into a low energy farm for the future, and discovers that nature holds the key. With her father close to retirement, Rebecca returns to her family's wildlife-friendly farm in Devon, to become the next generation to farm the land. But last year's high fuel prices were a wake-up call for Rebecca. Realising that all food production in the UK is completely dependent on abundant cheap fossil fuel, particularly oil, she sets out to discover just how secure this oil supply is. Alarmed by the answers, she explores ways of farming without using fossil fuel. With the help of pioneering farmers and growers, Rebecca learns that it is actually nature that holds the key to farming in a low-energy future..

G'day Murray. Your first posted link in google has been killed already.
I have the DVD about The Future of Food and it's chilling even though it's been around a while. GMO food, chemical farming and oppressive legislation are some of our big hurdles.

This thread should have gotten a few more replies but it seems seeing certain words or sentences are becoming increasingly more difficult to read for some. Perhaps another hurdle I suspect.

    Good stuff!

Hi ORex ( I'm going to abbreviate your name)
Murray's link on the BBC excellent documentary is still viewable on this Link

Everyone should see this wonderful documentary made by the BBC. Plant diversity and encouraging a variety of "weeds" to grow on one's farm for animal feed encourages vigorous health and vitality for all. An interesting observation made in the film is that in decades past - as a farmer would plough his field, flocks of birds would follow the tractor eating worms along the furrow etc.
Now after the farmers switched to fertilisers and pesticides - no bird follow the tractor. No worms live in the soil as the soil organisms are dead. This film is about Permaculture and Organic Farming. Can it work in a world of dwindling Oil Resources? Very inspirational.

Thanks for the updated link Castaway, I just wish I could speak Polish to know which is the download link. I speak enough German to understand the comments.

My family has pigeon holed me as a kook and refuses to hear about most of this stuff BB. They tend to think government can care for them from the cradle to the grave and it's fully trustworthy. "After all it's USDA inspected and approved."
I have some like minded friends who appreciate it and the remainder seems to suffer from chronic apathy. I don't stop trying none the less.

    Cheers y'all!

This reminds me of what I read in Peter Andrews' book, Back from the Brink, about restoring his horse property in the Hunter Valley. Early in his learning period, he visited horse studs in the UK and was amazed to discover that they thought that a good pasture should contain 80 different plant species (including, obviously, "weeds"). Biodiversity and fishmeal fertilizer on the pastures seemed to work for producing good horses!

Yes - Terrific observation. Excellent book. That guy is a prophet. When I watch my own chooks feeding or free ranging in the garden - thats exactly what they do - they feast on odd little weeds growing amongst the grass. This one and that one - chickens know what they need. The end result is beautiful eggs with orange yolks every morning and beneficial vitamins and vitality for the people that eat their own produce. (or thats what I like to think)
