    Interesting...

I was thinking about styrofoam peanuts as well seeing as I have a bunch of them.

Tho I'm not sure how safe it is to use that and if there are any chemicals that would leech out into the edible plants.

    Hi,

They float, wouldn't anchor plants well and would blow around in a light breeze......so I doubt that they'd be much use as a growing media.

I am aware, however, of where styrofoam beads have been used as media in a trickling bio-filter.

    Gary,

Do you know if there are any ill effects from styrofoam transferable to edible foods?

I'm not aware of any. Styrofoam sheets are widely used in raft aquaponics.
