    Cats and aquaponics

My system has been trucking along for a few weeks since I did a major upgrad, from 8 gallon grow bed to 27 gallon grow bed(1/2 filled so really 14 gal) and from a 10 gallon tank to a 75 gallon tank. The system cycled in a few days and had 16 goldfish and 6 neons. Everything had been fine for 2 weeks and all of a sudden a goldfish died, then another one, checked the water and ammonia went through the roof. Had nitrites too so I figured it was running just not that good. Had my son help me do 75% water change and he tells me, "you know the kittens been peeing in the growbed".

I enclosed the growbed so the cat couldn't get in there and it's starting to get back to equilibrium 3 days and many water changes later. So If you have an indoor (outdoor for that matter) that has a sudden spike in ammonia and nitrite, Keep your eyes out for cats that might be fertilizing your grow bed.
