Thread: Geoponics?

  1. #1

    Geoponics?

I'm doing a comparison of lettuce grown in an aquaponic system to lettuce grown in soil for a research project for a class.
I've been trying to find the word that means "to grow plants in soil." The closest thing I've found is geoponics which some sites define as growing plants in soil while other sites define geoponics as the study of agriculture. The words agronomy and agriculture are really broad for definitions so I'm not sure which word to use. There are probably other words that I haven't found yet.
Does anyone know the correct word to use? Thanks.

Gardening is still kind of a broad term. Aquaponics could be considered a form of gardening.

    Hi Aqua Trox,

How about... soil based gardening, soil gardening, the old fashioned way?
    Sorry I don't know a scientific term.

Hope you do well with your project.

Thanks for the replies. I may have to go with a non-scientific word; hopefully the professor will let it go without the scientific part. It will work out.

Why not just Aquaponics vs Traditional Agriculture? Most professors will realize what you mean by agriculture referring to soil based, and if you put the traditional in front of it they know you'll commonly accepted methods. At least I hope they would. I live next to a major ag college so it helps some.
