    Hi Mortys,

    Welcome to APHQ.

    I would build a Fluidized sand filter. They adapt quickly to changes in ammonia and are quite inexpensive to build.
    I agree......but they also load up with solids pretty quickly.....which reduces flow rate.....which may rule them out for most of the people who use small submersible pumps that (while they can move a lot of water) don't produce much pressure.

    I'd certainly like to try them on one of my system.....but I'd probably use an external centrifugal pump......and I'd set up other mechanical filtration devices upstream of one.
