Who says foam fractionization (protein skimmers) don't work in freshwater?

I found this DIY protein skimmer thread on Koiphen.com. Check out the pics of results of FF in some freshwater Koi ponds if you don't believe it works. There's also a large version in another thread.

I'm looking forward to building one of these as one of my tanks does have some foam issues.

I think they said they are not as effective as they are in saltwater. But I have seen some that do a great job, but I worry about the aquaponics size of things. If I use one will I remove to many nutrients from the water for the plants? So I left everything running just the way it is. So far not problems.
All system tests are now recorded at http://aquaponics.scorched-revolution.com/ So if you are interested in my system tests. go there

I have some literature that says under 5 ppt they are ineffective which I think is not correct.

I agree probably not a good idea in aquaponics. One poster on the Koiphen site said his wife's roses loved the stuff. Constantly blooming.

Check out the foam coming out of a skimmer on this Koi pond.
