    Hi Sam,

You can build a system pretty much as you've described and you'll be able to grow a few fish and a useful quantity of vegetables.

If you incorporate some simple filtration into your system, you will be able to grow more fish (in greater safety) and more vegetables.

    Welcome to APHQ.

    Hi Sam,

It's good gear but, unless you were considering a large (much larger than the usual backyard system), I'd recommend that you leave them all alone. The power bills will require that you mortgage your house.

There are a wide variety of devices that will allow you to capture and remove solids far more cost-effectively.

Keep reading, mate......it's all here somewhere.

    HI Sam

I would be a little careful with second hand pumps. Most barra set ups run high levels of salt. With the heart of your system, the pump, always buy new ones with warranty.

Many people use Seasol or Maxicrop to provide plant nutrients while they are waiting for their system to cycle. My preference is to cycle the system without fish.

Fishless cycling happens very quickly when compared to using fish. I'd advise that you plant your grow beds out once the system has cycled.....and you have nitrate production in hand.

You would have to ask how long the pumps have running for Sam. Generally, secondhand aquaculture gear sells at 10cents in the dollar on the new price, much to the dismay of farmers.
