    Filter questions

I am in the planning phase of a AP system. I planning on using
some grow beds, however I would like the FT and filters to be able to operate as a stand alone system if needed. Given a 1000 gallon FT, and a 55 gal swirl filter, with brushes and a 55 gal bio filter with 50L of K1,aka Pugos system, would this be be enough filtration to handle 1 kg. of 32% feed per day.

I plan to retire in a year and would like to raise most of our food. This will be part of a microponic system I am planning.
I have started with wicking beds and quail production will be next and then the fish.

I owned a farm many years ago and raised cattle, chickens, tobacco and a garden as a part time thing. I now have a 1/4 acre back yard to work with.

    Thanks for any advice

    Hi Dennis

The system you describe sounds like a very usefull system to grow fish, however I doubt if it is big enough to handle 1KG of feed a day and the amount of fish it would take to eat 1KG of feed a day.

Would love to hear about your quail production. That is a subject I have great interest in.. Oh, My system is based on fish more than plants seems to work well that way. I am keeping 95 Tilapia in my little system so far it is handling everything with no problems. I lost one fish for no reason I could figure out and one swan into the brush filter because I removed the strainer to improve water flow because the Tilapia poop to much.. but other than that it seems bullet proof.

Will start the quail after the new year. Looking at the Texas A&M white quail.

    Hi Dennis

There is a design tool you can download for free which can assist you in dimensioning the grow beds. If you have not already seen it.

Yes I have used Dr Lennard's table, but it uses the grow beds to handle the solids. I would like a filtration system that could stand alone

    Re: Filter questions

My fish are doing great, trying to keep my wife from cooking them until spring. But I keep thinking I'm going to come home and I am going to see one on my dinner plate. Just yesterday she was telling how big they are. My wife is Filipina so fish are preferred food.

    Re: Filter questions

I planned one liter of K1 for every fish and simply filed the barrel with brushes, which was 14 of them.

What would have been better was for me to build to two MBR filters, and a static media filter before my brush filter. Which should be K1 media too.
