Has anyone tried using their AP water for livestock, considering giving to my chickens.
Cut out the middleman , the plants. Pete

I don't have any livestock, But my dog likes to drink the AP water when she gets the chance...doesn't seem to bother her. I have seen people drinking AP water, trying to show how clean it is.. So I don't think it would hurt animals.

Adults can suffer from the same thing, but infants are far more susceptible.A sort of "blue baby syndrome" can also be caused by Methemoglobinemia . It is believed to be caused by high nitrate contamination in ground water resulting in decreased oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin in babies leading to death. The groundwater is thought to be contaminated by leaching of nitrate generated from fertilizer used in agricultural lands and waste dumps.
Substances that can cause methemoglobinemia
Inorganic agents
- Nitrates – Fertilizers, contaminated well water, preservatives, industrial products
- Chlorates
- Copper sulfate – Fungicides
Organic nitrites/nitrates
- Amyl nitrite
- Isobutyl nitrite
- Sodium nitrite
- Nitroglycerin
- Nitroprusside
- Nitric oxide
- Nitrogen dioxide

Well as my system is in balance the reading are ammonia 0.0 nitrites 0.0, nitrates 0.0, Nothing in the water to harm anyone that I can see or test for.

The chickens are separate, just water them with AP water. Could they pick up some nutrient's , I feed them Noni now. Potent eggs.
The to much nitrates is good info, not certain it's applicable to AP water, I'll check those sites. Bad joke the middleman, instead of feeding chickens grown plants, just give them the water. Pete
Hi Pete,
Notwithstanding the failed humour, the question is a valid one in Microponics terms,
Using fish tank water as drinking water for other livestock is a very useful thing to do.....with the following considerations:
- Many livestock have access to water that is in far worse condition than that which comes out of a fish tank. Many humans, too.....for that matter.
- Where you have a choice, you have a technical (and moral) responsibility to provide the best water quality that you can.
- Swapping water out of an aquaculture system.......and an aquaponics system.....is a good thing to do.......and not just to rid the water of nitrates and phosphates.
The main issue in providing fish tank water to other livestock is the presence of high levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
If you pass the fish tank water through a mini-wetlands arrangement, not only will you be able to remove the nitrates and phosphates from the water, but you'll be able to use the nutrients that are captured in the wetlands to grow grass.....clean fresh fodder......and clean water for your livestock.

Thanks Gary, good info, just a little water now. Goal is self-sufficient, whatever I can permaculture together here. Fortunately my curiosity, exceeds my ignorance....Pete
