My apologies for not being here...

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

My apologies for not being here for several months. The problem is I only raise fish in my RAS' in the winter and mothball them (not literally of course) the rest of the year. During the warm months of the year I'm really busy with the outdoor ponds and my fish taxidermy business. I'm also concerned humidity could get too high in the walk in basement during the summer, which is the other part of the reason I shut down the RAS' then. It's not a problem during the winter when the air is drier.

I'm excited that I will be setting up up to two high schools with a RA systems complete with feed and fish this winter with the only catch I get the fish back at the end of the school year to plant in ponds. It's a win/win as the kids get to learn about aquaculture specifically RAS', and I can increase production more than my limited floor space at home. I'm also committed as my state aquaculture president to get the word out that fish farming is a possibility.

I'll keep everyone posted with pictures.

    Hi Cecil,

I guess that resolves my earlier question of, "Where you been?"

I'm working with RAS' at the moment, too. In fact, the more I have to do with aquaponics, the more convinced that it all starts with recirculating aquaculture.

I think you're right. I can't wait to expand into aquaponics eventually. The one high
school is very interested in that as they just built a green house.

Thanks Kellen. I'm hoping some kids will get the bug and it can become a vocation opportunity.

I believe that the way that you've done it is the right way. Begin by learning about fish first and, after you've water quality management sorted, then start to integrate the plants. You also learn how to design a system more effectively.

Makes sense to me Gary. I've also been told by a friend that runs a large scale commercial system that my small scale system is a good way to learn the basics before investing any substantial money. I've been pushing this concept in our aquaculture newsletter and of course I'm getting the high schools started that way.
