Still on vacation here in and around Washington DC. ...also an involuntary participant in my first earthquake. I had break vacation mode to chime in on this.

I agree with GaryD here. I'll let some marketing spin slide a little. In my opinion these things are best sorted out by the free market and voted on by the opening of people's wallets. If you have the money for a course but not the common sense to do a simple google search for other information then you deserve to loose that money. I'm not saying that's the case with this course but it would apply to anything in life. What is legitimate will be decided by the market along with what is a scam. The free information is easy to find. Is it worth the effort to keep fools from giving away their money. I say no. Let them contribute to the economy.

    Hi,

I received a response from Colle Davis and, in effect, what he said was that, while he appreciated my concern, he saw no reason to respond to critics. While it will not satisfy those critics, I found his response heartening.

RupertofOz, one of the more strident critics of all things Portable Farms, has claimed that he knows things about the Portable Farms system.....but, as so often is the case, he's big on innuendo and light on detail. Rupert.....put up......or shut up.

What is really needed in the community is better access to free information. An organised website of DIY AP component building instructions with detailed how-to steps with photos and videos. A section for whole systems and another section for operating procedures. An AP wiki.

There is no reason this can't be done on a forum, it just needs slightly more proactive moderation on threads that set out to be a howto guide rather than an open discussion thread.

    Hi Jobney,

Sounds good.....but who's going to pay for all of that work to be done.

There is no reason this can't be done on a forum, it just needs slightly more proactive moderation on threads that set out to be a howto guide rather than an open discussion thread.
Edward....your suggestion is a useful one but you have to be careful about pruning irrelevant material from threads or you start to get accused of messing with people's freedom of speech. The other thing is that, while many posts might be technically-oriented, not all of the posts on a forum are accurate. Some examples of popularly held beliefs that are inaccurate or don't hold water without qualification include:

    • Grow beds must be 300mm deep.
    • Grow beds never need to be cleaned.
    • Flood and drain systems do not require solids removal.
    • Fish can be stocked at the rate of 100 fish per 1000 litres of water.
    • Flow rate should be equal to the volume of the fish tank ever hour.
    • Aquaponics is easy.

These myths are like myths of any kind.....there is an element of truth in them but they are also shrouded in fairy tale stuff.
