    GaryD's New System

    Hi,

My recent purchase of the Nexus Eazy Pod has prompted me to set up a new system probably to replace the little mega bin system in which I'm keeping our golden perch.

Few people have ever grown these fish out in an aquaponics system so there's plenty we don't know about them.

While they've been going along nicely, the mega bin system was only ever intended to be a temporary home for them.

I've had this nice little 1000 litre aquaculture tank lying around for months and it will make an ideal companion for the new filter.

The tank has a sloping flood and bottom drain. The fitting on the drain was damaged so I bought a new flange arrangement and fitted it.

At this stage, I'm planning to have a combination moving bed bio-filter/sump tank.

    Anyway, the fish tank's sorted.

    Hi Gary,

Look forward to your builds progress,
What size are your Goldens now?..what temp is their water?..any rough expectations of their growout time?

    Cheers,
    Shane.

    Hi Shane,

The new system is progressing slowly. The tank, Nexus filter and sump tank have all made their way into the shed. I'll probably start to hook it all up this coming weekend.

Our golden perch are doing OK. They are currently living in conditions that are less than desirable and, for water quality management reasons, I'm limiting the amount of feed that I give them.

I haven't measured the water temperature in recent days (weeks).

As soon as we couple up components for the new system, we'll move the fish.....and ramp up the feeding.

I don't know what the grow out period would be in normal circumstances. This batch are not representative of what we'd do ordinarily.

I might try another batch when the new season's fingerlings become available - and do a grow out trial on them.

Just finished the Queenslander and off to the next design......
Pugo.....we tend to build a system, learn what we need from it....and then we'll dispose of it, usually for a bit less than it owes us. That's how we've accumulated the knowledge and experience around aquaponics that we have.

    Hi Pugo,

I wouldn't like to create the impression that I operate with carte blanch.

I'm on notice that I have to sell some of what I've got before there's any more.

    Gary,
I do feel adoration for your prose. As I’m an English teacher now, my once formidable vocabulary has diminished to some dimly recollect thing of the past. As instruction in foreign countries limit your usage of your own language to teaching when what and where. A negligible blunder by using expanded vocabulary will just return a look of shock, so now I spend my days verbalizing like a six year old. But on the other hand, the hours are short and the currency is OK.

    Re: GaryD's New System

    Hi,

When I started this thread back in early June, I trotted out my aquaculture tank and announced that it was to be used in my new recirculating aquaculture system.

I got very busy elsewhere and the best that I achieved was to remove the two little red trickling bio-filters and replace them with the Nexus Eazy Pod. The fish tank is ready to hook up.....but it just hasn't happened yet.

......and I've sold the Queenslander......and it leaves for its new home next weekend......with about 30 silver perch.

I still have around 50 Golden Perch in the little mega bin system......and I've ordered some jade perch.

The sale of The Queenslander leaves me with just one system.....and two lots of fish.....so I may have to change things around a bit.

I can still build a system out of the raised aquaculture tank......and my two swirl tanks. That would house the jades without any problem.

I will have to continue using the Mega bin and the Eazy Pod to house the golden perch in the short to medium term.
