Thread: IBFP Question?

    IBFP Question?

Beyond chicken, quail, and pygmy goats, can anyone think of any other varieties of livestock that would be suited to IBFP? I know rabbits can be on the list but there are pretty strict regulations on them just about anywhere. A meat source beyond fish and fowl would be desirable.

    Thanks ahead of time...

How about meat pigeons? I thought about ducks but they need lots of water, are walking poo houses and can be very noisy depending on breed.

    Re: IBFP Question?

    Hi,

    How about meat pigeons?
Squabs are excellent to eat.....particularly those of the heavy breeds like Giant Runt, King, Mondaine, etc.

I thought about ducks but they need lots of water, are walking poo houses and can be very noisy depending on breed.
Muscovies are perfect for urban situations. They hiss rather than quack and they only need water that is deep enough to wash their eyes. They will graze if good grass is available.

Depending on where you live, some of the heritage pig breeds are worth considering.

    Snails are good, too.

Cute and fluffy, pets that taste good and are good for you.... Cavies..... Ummm otherwise known as guinea pigs... There are some interesting comments about these in regard to longevity in Peru.

    Re: IBFP Question?

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. The trick is to come up with something easily acceptable for the masses to use. My goal is to design a a system that can be delivered and self contained in a mini barn style so that people in areas struck by natural disasters or other such things can have sustainable food systems delivered so that they're not purely dependent on emergency assistance from places like FEMA. They could also be used by impoverished areas. I got the idea from a company that uses old shipping containers to turn them ino small homes for poverty areas instead of people living in shacks. Please keep the ideas coming.
