    Aquaponic Growing Media

Theoretically, any media used for hydroponics can be used for Aquaponics.

In practice, however, there are a limited range of media used. They include:
    • Gravel
    • Perlite
    • Coco-peat
    • Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA)
Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

The attached photo illustrates these media.....(from top left) fine coco peat, perlite, coarse coco peat......(from bottom left) gravel, vermiculite (not generally used) and Light Expanded Clay Aggregate.

I'm using 8mm scoria, another expanded product (although this time it is expanded by nature rather than man). We'll see how well it performs...

I know I could ask my teacher, but he is not always around - could you tell me (us? ) what they are?

    Re: Aquaponic Growing Media

    Hi Tiger,
    • Gravel
      • Advantages.....cheap, provides for good nitrification, lasts forever, excellent drainage
      • Disadvantages....hard work to handle, tough on the hands, may impact nutrient balance (depending on gravel type).
    • Perlite
      • Advantages....very light, inert, good drainage
      • Disadvantages.....floats (so is of questionable worth for flood and drain beds), cost
    • Coco-peat
      • Advantages....excellent water retention, fully recyclable,
      • Disadvantages.....may strip certain nutrients (unless buffered), cost
    • Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA)
      • Advantages....good nitrification, lighter than gravel and easier to clean, excellent drainage
      • Disadvantages.....high cost, floats (can be weighed down with a layer of gravel)
While this list is not exhaustive, it will get you going. Feel free to ask for more details on any media in which have an interest.

For what it's worth, my personal favourites are gravel grow beds and coco peat beds, trays and satellite pots.

    Hope this helps.

    Gary
