Hi Jamesto,
I started out having the coco peat bed hooked into the flood and drain system and it worked fine, except that the coco peat sent the return water very dirty. Like the colour of a very very strong cup of coffee.
The fish did not appear to be bothered by this, however, I could not see the fish which is a big part of the fun in Aquaponics.
The water did gradually clear, but not completely.
At the moment I do not have the bed hooked into the system. Instead, I water it by hand once or twice a week with a watering can using water directly from the fish tank. It is working great. Takes very little water, about 6 to 8 ltrs a week.
I would not think you could run a whole system without some gravel grow beds. The gravel grow beds just work so well.
