Hi John,
I saw the same post on Gizmag. I'd love to think that it might work. The sea farms have already experience major issues with the build up of fish faeces on the ocean floor immediately below the cages. Large quantities of tuna (and I think yellowtail kingfish) perished in sea cages (that were moored in Boston Bay in South Australia) when a storm stirred the bottom up and the fish literally choked on their own waste.
The sea cages were subsequently towed out into the open sea in an effort to avoid the problem happening again.
It would be great if sea cucumbers could overcome this sort of problem......and the Asian communities would be delighted, too. I believe that they like to eat them.
