Thread: What size gravel for grow beds?

Cool What size gravel for grow beds?

I have used 3-5mm gravel for hydroponic grow beds before.
What size gravel is best for aquaponics and how often should I flood in a tropical environment (Darwin)?
Haven't set up a system yet, I've only just discovered aquaponics and am keenly interested.

    Hi Allan,

    Welcome aboard!

I'd recommend gravel in the range of 10mm to 20mm. I prefer blue metal while others suggest drainage gravel.

While both work, blue metal dust will elevate pH (not a bad thing if you're using fishless cycling) and the clay which attaches to drainage gravel will discolour the water for weeks if you don't wash the gravel first (which wastes water).
