Fish startled by turn off of light

Even though I have a dim light in the fish tank room, if I forget to turn it off before dark some fish freak when I snap the light off. I guess I need to rig some kind of dimmer switch or a timer for it to shut off before it gets dark.

Anyone have this happen? You can hear someone thump against the tank when the light goes off.

This happens in some of my tilapia breeder tanks. In my case, it seems to happen more in some tanks versus others and goes in phases too. Strange, but I don't worry too much about it and still just flip the switch nightly without dimming at all.

I mostly have them freak out when I turn it on, but not as much when I turn it off. Most of the thumping that I have observed is due to males chasing females. The tilapia get frisky when the lights go out.

    Me, too.

Some species of fish will also go berserk if you shine a torch in the tank.
