    Trout Farming

An interesting news piece just shown on ABC Landline. The story is about a small time farmer who is successfully raising trout and selling the processed fish and other associated by products.
Here is the link to the transcript.

    Hey Murray,

Fantastic Article. What a great little farming idea that guy has. Maybe someone should drop him an e-mail on aquaponics for all the fish water

When I read the last line of the story I thought of you Murray "PETER DOCKING: Basically not a serious or a good fish farmer unless you've killed a few and learned how to not kill your fish. " I hope to be in that boat soon to.

    Cheers,

    Duncan.

Yes Duncan, I really related to that sentence. I felt as if I must now be qualified.

Not always so. I have never lost one fish to date. Point is that I learn from other peoples mistakes, not learning from my own as it costs me much more (especially having koi). Either way we are learning but what is more heartbreaking than having say $5,000 worth of produce that stuffed up due to incompetence for example? It is always best to learn what could go wrong can go wrong so one needs to prepare or fix the problem before it even starts. As with fish the two largest causes of death are: Low dissolved oxygen & Poor water quality (including ammonia levels etc) both can be easily solved to reduce or sometimes even remove any fish deaths of a system.

    Johnathon,

I am suitably qualified under Peter Dockings definitions to hang a shingle. I thought it was a good segment on landline. Interesting was the guy buying fish off him for an aquaponics set up?
