Hi Jobney,
When I made mine I did not trim them down and they worked fine... I guess it depends on what you think looks good and will work for you.. Maybe 3" to start with, if you want to trim it.. but I would merely be guessing.
I also had some room to put them on the outside of my tanks, to give them a bit more height, so when they come down into the tank via a 45 degree angle the end at the bottom of the tank, was reasonably close to the middle of the tank... One thing I found, when you put them outside the tank you should, plan a way of supporting them so they stay straight.. inside the tank the water does holds them up, nice and flat.
Cheers.
I left mine at 3 for now but since my elbow out of the tank is fairly high on the stock tank the bottom of the bucket is very high. The water level is very close to the top. If I ever wanted to use the bucket as an emergency overflow if the pipe to the bottom got blocked I would need to cut it down to only an inch tall.
If I leave the bottom of the Suckeruppa pipe open to collect morts will the non dead goldfish be able to swim back down the pipe or will I end up with a big pile of goldfish flopping about the top bucket until I get home? If I screen the pipe in the tank to keep fish out the mort sucking benefit is lost.
Hi Jobney,
The ability to recover dead fish is "small 'taters in a little system. It comes into its own when you are dealing with a large tank where seeing dead fish is likely to be difficult.
The important thing to remember is to insert a strainer in the outlet hole on the "suckeruppa".....or your goldfish or fingerlings will make their way into your pipework - not good.
Any fish that travel up the suction pipe will find themselves in the tray. They usually flick themselves back into the tank....but occasionally you'll find them flapping around in the tray.
For small tanks (and assuming that I can't insert an outlet into the bottom of the tank), I prefer to use a rainwater diverter. It tends to be a bit more stable......and is more effective when it comes to having solids pass out of the fish tank quickly.

Hi Mac,
We sold the 3 Mega Bin System......and I've built several other systems since that one.
I'm currently working with a single mega bin unit......that I hope to expand to become a multi mega bin system.
You're welcome to visit any weekend. PM me in advance of any visit for our contact details.
