Any Tips for Growing AP growing in HOT summers and Cold Winters

Hi,

I have the opportunity to buy cheap land in Bulgaria. My wife is from there and as far as I know nobody there has even tried hydroponics let alone aquaponics. The problem for me was originally that I was thinking hydroponic farm... but nutrients in Bulgaria are not available. So when I came across aquaponics the nutrient issue disappeared. Great I thought!

Then..... what about the practicalities of coping with HOT summers 40degrees C or more and COLD Winters... down to minus 20 degree C or so....

This is an area I have difficulties in (no real aquaculture experience).

Anyone got any thoughts on this ?

How to keep the water chilled and how to keep the water at a reasonable temperature to keep the fish and grow beds going? ermm.. needless to say as cheap as possible form a fuel bill perspective.

Have you contemplated vermiponics if getting access to nutrients is your main motivation?

A thoguht came to mind but depending how large a land space you have you may want to try for a solar water heater. It will only heat the water during the day and you'll want a large surface area for the sun to heat up a bunch of hoses to collect that hot water. Next you'll need to find a way to store that hot water. Rmemeber that around 4-5 feet down in the ground the temp stays an avg temp ove rthe whole year and is non freezing most of hte time.

You can also consider having a large (and I mean LARGE) compost pile and bury hose inside it so that the compost will heat thewater. I'm in the same situation as you are weatherwise. We can reach as low as -35C and peak at +48C (rare peak and that is with humidex) so something to consider as using heaters would rotate your dial fast. Finding some aquatic life that has a wide temp range is likely the key here.
