    Tank Access Barriers

    Hi,

One of the design criteria that I encourage for any new system is that the tank should be able to be covered......to limit the amount of sunlight (for algae control), to allow greater control of temperature and to prevent unwanted access to the tank by leaves, pets and (most important of all) toddlers.

I've just upgraded the access barriers for my tanks. They are made from Qubelok and welded steel mesh and they have two doors so that the tank can be accessed from either side. A pipe and cable aperture allows unrestricted access to the tank without disturbing the pipes or cables. The plastic curtains prevent leaves from blowing into the tank and limits overnight heat loss from the tank.

The photos provide a couple of views of each of my tank access barriers.

    Re: Tank Access Barriers

    Hi FF,

The filter is a combination of mechanical, biological and UV. We use it to clarify the tank when the algae becomes a bit rampant and I can no longer see the fish clearly.

Every now and then, I'll use a broom to scrub the sides of the tank which makes the water go murky. The pressure filter will bring it crystal clear in about five hours.

I only switch on the UV light to deal with the algae.

The pressure filter has a 4500 litre pump connected to it so that when I want to clean either of my tanks, I just drop the pump over the side of the tank and start it up.

    Re: Tank Access Barriers

    Hi,

We pioneered the widespread use of access barriers for aquaponics systems. They are no less relevant today.

Fish tanks (and other large vessels) are dangerous places for toddlers and pets.
