Thread: Trout

    Trout

I suspect others have posted threads on Trout but i wonder if anyone has looked into growth rates of them including the growth rate on triploid traut this is a sexually inert fish that due to the changes is not territorial and has a much better growth rate due in the main to them not going into Red which is a time of great sexual activity and in fact consumes a large part of their year they do not look the best in fact red is the predominant colour of both the male and female and therefore fights occur taking the condition down.
    any ideas??

    Re: Trout

    Hi doug.a,

Actually, there's been very little comment on trout in this forum.

The only thing I know about them is that when they are raised in salt water (marketed at Ocean Trout), they really kick on.

gary that is correct the brown trout will and does go to sea hhere in wa and comes back basically as sea trout a much better table fish. The reason i asked is due to the triploid trout is a lot more placid as such there i8s no competition so higher stocking levels can be held with no (???) problems as they normally are very aggressive.

    Re: Trout

    doug.a,

I did a bit of googling on triploid trout and they seem like a great aquaculture proposition for colder waters. I haven't got a clue where you'd buy the fingerlings.

I am going to contact Pemberton fisheries and see if they know where they can be bought i made contact with a Guy in the UK who produces the equipment and he said that a number had been sent to Australia as you say cold water but an interesting concept.

Thanks gary i will sit down and read it Tmrw. I am watching two of my other loves cricket and motor sport tonight so i will continue tmrw. I am getting things ready for my second system having played with my first one and having been given a larger tank so i will be busy digging holes and getting it set up. I have used redclaw and yabbies until now but will continue with that but continue to do more research into the availability of triploids.
Have a good night and congratulations opn you new system it looks great.

    Gary.
i have been making more enquires and it seems as though Triploids are available in WA. However the working paper states that the transportaion of triploids and subsequent stocking is to be looked at on a case to case Basis. I Have rung the fisheries hatchery in Pemberton today but no reply so far will contnue to try and will ask if there are triploids elsewhere, the only other State that has even writen anything on Triploids is Tasmania.

    Re: Trout

Well there has been some interest in this subject so i have been doing some more digging. i have been researching the environmental needs of Trout and i have come up with some info. There is a link or two i will put up for you to browse they are all on the same site. Firstly the main site is the dept of fisjeries in WAand is
    www.fish.wa.gov.au
The second is a direct link to the paper in question which is the same as above with the extension
    /docs/frr/frr130/index.php?0308

The access is through the pearling and aquaculture point and follow your nose through it the paper is downloadable
