    Raised Garden Beds

    Hi,

We've had these concrete raised beds for several years.

During that time, they've been moved about three times as we've terra-formed our backyard. Since they probably weigh about 400kg each, moving them always involves a mini-excavator or similarly robust machine.

This time out, I've placed two of them up near our farm kitchen area and the other two down by the chicken houses.

This weekend, we planted two of the beds out to vegetables and herbs and, while I wasn't looking, Her Serene Highness claimed the other two for her agaves and cordylines. As a concession, I've been told I can plant oregano or some similar herb around the agaves as a ground cover.

    Re: Raised Garden Beds

    Hi,

One of our favourite non-aquaponic growing systems is the raised sheet mulch bed. We have four of them.

Back in mid April, we planted two of beds after their most recent move. As the photos demonstrate, growth is good.

A third bed was planted out with more vegetable seedling recently and we've set the fourth one up as a potato bed. In this bed, we scraped the soil up into a mound in the centre of the bed and planted the seed potatoes in the trough that had been created. As the potato plants grow, we'll drag the soil back around the plants.

    Hi,

Our potato raised bed garden has kicked on nicely. We pulled the dirt mound in the centre of the bed down around the plants and mulched the potato plants with sugar cane mulch.

Here's a photo of one of our four circular raised beds.....taken today.

We've been eating silver beet out of the raised bed by the bucketful......and we have lots more vegetables on the way. Regrettably, the broccoli met an untimely fate at the hands of aphids.

    Re: Raised Garden Beds

    Hi,

About five months ago, we planted out ten seed potatoes.

A week ago, the plants had died off indicating that the potatoes (asssuming there were any) were ready to harvest.

Today, we dug 7.5kg of potatoes.

Anyone know what sort of yield per plant is reasonable for potatoes?

    Hi,

On a recent trip to Melbourne, I came across these very tidy raised beds. They were made from recycled plastic "wood".

    Hi,

Our raised beds are beginning to hit their straps. The four zucchinis (courgettes for our US friends) have flowered and are bearing tiny fruit.....and We have 6 tomato (bush) plants in an adjacent raised bed.
