    Hi,

We began to re-build the stone retaining wall around the bottom tier of our new microponics space. Each stone was placed by the machine operator - largely untouched by human hands.

The top level is where our vine trellis and farm kitchen are going - so 10 holes had to be dug to accommodate the posts. Reminds me of the opal diggings at Coober Pedy.

    Hi,

After six hours, we had the bottom tier of the stone retaining wall built and some crusher dust spread.

The holes for the vine trellis had been dug and more crusher dust had been spread around the top level.

Our laying chickens have managed to keep up the egg supply in the face of bobcats, excavators and stump grinders working alongside of their pen.

Construction of the vine trellis/pergola commences tomorrow.

    Hi,

The vine trellis framework got erected today.

It sounds so simple when you say it that way, but this structure is 3 metres high and took me and four Samoan amigos four hours to get it pointing skywards.

This is where we'll locate our outdoor eating area and our micro-farm kitchen.

In the coming days, we'll attach some more timber work and some shade cloth to provide shade until the vines grow over the trellis.

Just around the corner are 180 paving slabs.....that's when the pain really starts.

    Hi,

The vine trellis is about finished - a bit of lattice work to go on the front.

The lawn in the front yard wasn't traveling too well so it's going to be replaced by a low maintenance garden area. We got the mini-excavator to dig a swale right across the front fence line. It got ripped to about 600mm and we've planted 12 bamboos in the swale which is constructed to take water run-off from the footpath. We've mulched the whole lot to keep things nice and most.

The presence of the mini-excavator allowed us to relocate our square foot garden bed and stand.

The second stage of the stone retaining wall has commenced but needs another hour or two before it's completed.

    It's been a busy week and a half......but it's worth it (I think).

    Hi Ian,

We managed to get the stone retaining wall almost finished last night - just before the heavens opened up.

    Hi,

    During the past few days:

Photo 1 - we finished the top tier of the stone wall.
Photo 2 - another view of the stone wall.
Photo 3 - we planted out the bamboos in the swale and mulched them - fortunately just before the rain came.
Photo 4 - a view from the deck looking down onto the pergola - we've spread crusher dust which we'll level off and compact with a vibrator plate and then we lay the bedding sand for the pavers.

    Hi,

Photo 1 - 28 square metres of paving going down.
Photo 2 - The paving is almost done - and me, too. We've still got to cut about 16 pavers and secure them with concrete.
Photo 3 - The bottom tier has been compacted.

    Hi Julie,

My back is particularly keen to see it finished.

Today, we planted four decorative vines across the front of the pergola. These will provide a nice shady environment when fully grown. I had intended to plant grapes but then I remembered that grapes drop off the vine and stain everything ......and when ripe and attract ants and insects which attract spiders.......which then invoke bad karma for me because I get made to kill them.

In the end it was easier to plant deciduous decorative varieties.
