    Hi,

Hydroponics wastes water, as it has to be flushed. Aquaculture wastes water, as it has to be flushed as well.
How much water a hydroponic or aquaculture system uses is purely a question of design......and the resource management outlook of the system operator.

If you use the spent hydro nutrient mix......or the nutrient-rich effluent from an aquaculture system....to grow food, livestock fodder or to irrigate trees...then there is no waste. Indeed, if you use the water for any purpose that would otherwise normally require fresh water (cleaning, toilet-flushing, etc) then you are leveraging its use.

As Ande has pointed out, aquaponics is aquaculture.

As there is a intense effort to clean water of waste around the world to this day. Even in the states and in Europe. I think there is still a long way to go before we get there, I know that is possible that everything can be done and produce minimal waste, but how many people are really doing this? Company's look at the bottom line and few worry about the environment unless it gives them good press or has some benefit to them..

All people/companys that follow the gowerning legislation do that.
Like in any other area some don't comply or cheat and get away with it, some get cauth.
Then there is unwanted ocurrences, where people/companys by acsident polute, the norm is to report it, and you might get away without a fine deepending on the cause (neglect is no exscuse).

Companys that are serious or in buissnes for the long run, are wery carefull about their reputation.

    cheers

    Hi,

We've been operating our aquaculture/aquaculture systems solely on rainwater for several years now.

There have been times that I thought we'd have to use mains water (because of drought) but it has always rained and delivered more free pure (relative to mains water) water.....just in time.

    Hi,

Earlier this week, I visited the folks who bought my Queenslander system to help them with connecting the grow beds. The fish are still plugging along.....and I got to see their free-ranging guinea pigs again.
