    The Queenslander

    Hi,

The design for my next aquaponics system "The Queenslander" is well advanced.

As the name suggests, "The Queenslander" is designed with local warm water species in mind.

Almost from the outset, I've had a checklist of criteria that I use when planning any aquaponics system. They can be viewed in a blog post that I've just completed.......here.

In the coming weeks, this thread will chronicle the The Queenslander project as it unfolds.

    Re: The Queenslander

    Hi,

Not surprisingly, The Queenslander took a bit of a kicking during the recent gabfest at BYAP. The principal concern, it seems, is that the system hasn't even been built and yet I'm supposed to be making all sorts of bold unsubstantiated claims for it.

My critics are correct in that The Queenslander hasn't been built but they're incorrect on the latter assertion.

Our late 4 Tank system provided us with the opportunity to road test several of the features (like the duckweed and sedimentation tank and the continuous flow clay pebble growing system).....and some of the other innovations (like the positioning of the bio-filter) are just the product of logical thinking.

Anyway, none of us is going to have to wait too long to see the outcome. The backyard is almost ready and I've placed the order for the equipment.

I'm more than happy to respond to my critics' technical questions if/when they actually think of some.

    Re: The Queenslander

    Hi,

One of my blog readers has requested a schematic which shows the water flow thru' The Queenslander......so I decided I'd post it here for y'all.

As I indicated during the first of my blog posts on The Queenslander, there are no magic boxes (or silver bullets). The most high tech bit of the whole system is the clarifier/filter and it (like the rest of the system) is an off-the-shelf purchase.

Where the Queenslander is innovative is in its overall layout and the manner of its operation.

The entire systems is geared toward providing optimum water quality. The system components are located.....and the grow beds are managed.....in a way which cost effectively optimises the capture and removal of suspended solids.

The Queenslander is an aquaponics system (with all of the benefits of such) which is designed to also support other non-aquaponic growing systems......like wicking beds.

I really like the look of the Queenslander system but why biofilter from the sump? Is this because the water there will have the least particulate matter? With the biofilter in somewaht of a recirulate mode what type of flow are you diverting back to the biofilter from the feed to the fish tank?
