Design for swirl filter based on 200 litre PVC barrel

Does anyone have a good design for a swirl filter?

I am about to experiment with designing a swirl filter using a 200 litre barrel.

I am finding that I have to change tank water every couple of days due to buildup of fish waste and food waste in the tank.

I am presently using a foam filter in one system but it is time consuming to wash the foam and keep the filter clean.

I have tied googling "swirl filter" but have not managed t find aying that actually shows how these filters are constructed.

I would like to try DWC and foam raft grow beds this year and I think the swirl filter would be essential.

Thanks FF, lots of commercial filters, particularly the bead type. I have a sand filter on the swimming pool and it has the "backwash" and multiport valve system. I wonder if anyone on the forum is using this kind of filter.

As I plan to buy 100 Barramundi fry soon, I am concerned about having good filtration and water quality. The grow beds just don't seem to keep the water clean for very long. A week between replacing water would be a long time, usually every two days I am emptying 100 litres and refilling the tanks.

I have found some good designs on the web for swirl filter and vortex pre-filter.
There is an 80 page pdf file available with photos and design instructions. I will post the URL in the next couple of days for anyone else who might be interested. Even though the plans are not for a 200 litre drum, there are enough details to help me work out how to build a swirl filter that will help flush out some of the muck left over in my system.

    Hi Dave,

Have you started building your filter yet and will you please post the URL to that PDF you mentioned please?

    Hi Andrew

I got some good ideas on the design of my filter from this PDF

    http://www.jpgo.co.uk/DIY-Bio-Filter...ri-Project.pdf

I have posted some more photos of my filter in another thread on this forum.

I made two filters and both are working well and easy to clean.

Here's the web site with the link to the pdf above.

This web page has some other links to DIY filters.
