Thread: chicken breeds

    Re: chicken breeds

    Hey folks,

Another personal dubious benefit of keeping the older hens after they have peaked in production numerically is that their eggs get larger and the incidence of double-yokers goes up. There's no way double-yokers add much of anything but fun and interest, but they are sort of magical, somehow. Out of the ordinary and fun for kids. At least they were for me.

C,mon cucuteni, admit it: You're still just a big kid at heart.

    Re: chicken breeds

    Hi everyone!

Can somebody please help me out?

I'm looking for some point of lay chickens to use as breeding stock for meat birds. I already have the rooster but l'm having a whole heap of trouble finding hens in the Brisbane Qld area.

the ones l would really like to get would be Sussexs, Rhode Island Reds or Plymouth Rocks.

Does anyone out there know where l can buy some please?

    Thanks!

    Hi Julie,

    There's the Australian Poultry Forum

You could also try Backyard Poultry Forum........and there's a thing called Chooknet. and they seem to have poultry classifieds and a club listing.

I've had a look in there and they don't seem to have anything other than point of lay chooks at the moment. But l will keep on looking in there and many thanks for the reply Mark.

In the meantime, if anyone else has any ideas l'd be grateful.

    Thanks!

Just a thought. If you contact your local show society they would be able to give you a contact for breeders in your area.

Breeders generally grow out quite a few birds, pick the very best to show and sell the rest.

Julie, trust me there is about 20 new entries a day. I am confident you will find some very soon. Also Gary's suggestion is a good one. In fact there is a Australorp breed club that operates out of the Beaudessert poulty club.
