How to seed....

I was wondering, how does one start seeds in an ap system? my indoor setup is using Hydroton and I was wondering if I could just stick the seeds in there and they would sprout? is there a specific depth i should be aiming for, will the seeds rot etc?

I have a couple sprouts atm, but I used cotton balls as sort of like a peat pellet.

You can sow seed directly into the clay. This is a gb that I threw a hand full of seed at one night.

Still not sure what they are.
