Talking Steve and Lynn's Aquaponics Garden

Although we originally planned to construct our system based on a home made tank with a black plastic liner below ground in a treated pine frame, we decided to start with a smaller system and get that going first before considering a large tank. We bought a system from Backyard Aquaponics in Jandakot, WA 4.5 weeks ago and stocked it with Rainbow Trout and a mix of winter vegetables.

Water tests this morning indicated that our system is balanced at last

PH has reduced from 8.0 to 7.6, Ammonia has reduced from high levels a few weeks ago to 1.0 ppm, Nitrites are 1 ppm and Nitrates are above 20 ppm.

The fish are happy and we are seeing some serious plant growth.

All is right with the world.

I've attached a pic of our system as it was on day 1 and a pic of the now balanced system from this morning. :-)

Looks good. Salt(sea salt) to 1ppt or 1kg per 1000ltrs will counter the nitrite.

If you turn the outlet 90 degree elbow up the other way (pointing up) you'll get even better oxygenation as well.

Would you add salt for rainbow trout?

    Hi,

That's a nice tidy little system.

Even if you upgrade to a larger system later, this unit will come in handy for fingerlings......or as someplace to put the last fish in a batch while you eat your way through them.

Would you add salt for rainbow trout?
It will be useful at that concentration.
