Controlling tilapia infestation

I heard that tilapia are banned in Australia since they are an invasive species and endanger the balance of ecosystem. I've heard of similar problem in Singapura/Singapore where tilapia had invaded the rivers there. From what I've read, they solution was to introduced a different breed of tilapia into the infested river. When different kind of tilapia mated togther, they produce less female fish and more male. This results in a decrease of tilapia population. Perhaps this method could work in other parts of the world or I could be wrong...

I lived i Brisbane for a while and I understand the Australian mentality regarding invasive species.
They have suffer a lot of bad situations.
I live in Afica and the situation is so different. Here, humans is the invasive specie...the same in my country El Salvador...in both places Tilapia has no chance...furthermore...not any specie has any chance... they will be dinner.

I really wish we could have Tilapia here. They are an ideal Aquaponics species.
However, there are plenty of stories of really big Tilapia being caught up a Somerset Dam wall and also in a lot of the rivers in North Qld.
So the genie is possibly already out of the bottle.

Evidently they first came into Australia via the Aquarium trade.

I am also told that they are not illegal in Western Australia. Does anyone know if that is true or not?

Well I wish we can convice the goverment to let us bring Red Claw from Qld.
Mexica has it and other around the region has it...but the stupid local authorities are not allowing the Red Claw. It will be ideal to hace it in our waters, it will be as good as Qld, but with milder winters...

Basically what we have in Australia is authority gone mad. There is a thriving trade in illegal birds in this country, yet the authorities will not allow farmers to catch and sell parrots etc that may be in plague proportions at times. It would definitely earn the government extra revenue, but the greenies would cry loud and long.

We already have tilapia in our waterways. Why not encourage AP'ers to raise them in controlled environments for eating. This may raise awareness of the fish species, resulting in more people fishing for them.

Might even be able to set up a business - Tommy tilapia takes on Charlie carp.
