Hello, I'm in San Ignacio , Belize. Two systems, hoping to make money on 2nd system, growing lettuce, herbs, have about 200 Red Tilapia, in continuous flow system, total of about 12,000 liters of water. Heat is the current problem. Pete
Hi,
I used to have an 1100L rainwater tank that was having tilapia and now I transferred the tilapia (about 50) to a fishtank that is 800L and my growbed is 550L. Because I already had the fish I figured I just start with the fish and hope for the best. The growbed has riverstones gravel and 2 days ago I planted some strawberry plants and also some cut off lettuce ends that still had roots on them and they seem to be doing well. Lettuce has already 2cm growth. My location is Malang, Indonesia, which is about 600m above sealevel. The water temp is constant at 21c and the PH a bit high at 7.5-8.

Hello,
I have 9 Rubbermaid stock water tanks in my system. These are composed of 8, 50 gallon water tanks filled with river rock (about 1/2 inch in size), and one 300 gallon water tank for the fish tank. I started last spring with 4 grow beds, and I have just added the second set of 4 grow beds. I have one 75 watt 500gph pump for each 4 grow beds, and I have a 3.5 watt dual line air pump connected to a long air stone down in the fish tank. The air pump and the water pumps run 24 hours a day. I use the old? method I found on this site over a year ago where I have one fish tank situated below the grow beds and the 8 grow beds that all use the auto-siphon process with the water draining back to the fish tank. It is a simple set up but has worked flawlessly over the last year. I have an over flow on the fish tank in case of heavy rain. I feed the fish, and check the water level almost daily.
I have stocked the fish tank with gold fish because the temperature here gets quite hot for a good portion of the year, but it gets below freezing for at least one month. The goldfish live on through the seasons. As a well known Aquaponics expert said on one of his videos "I hate to say this folks, but the fish are not the most important thing in the aquaponics system". I may have paraphrased slightly, but that is the jist of it. When I heard those words, I felt a tremendous weight lift off my aquaponics shoulders. I am after the wonderful organic food that comes from this system.
I live in the North West panhandle area of Florida in the United States. I hope to make it to the Aquaponics seminar to be held in Orlando Florida in September of this year ( a 10 hour drive from where I live and still in the same state).

In case the panhandle reference does not make sense to those outside the United States, it is an area of a state that extends, geographically, off the main shape of the state. Think of the handle on the big dipper constellation.
