I know what you mean, its the same here. The seas here are some of the best for shellfish, yet every shop has prawns from thialand and china. Its ridiculous. But heres an idea, how about aquaculturing shrimp? I know some lads that us the water they change from their marine tanks to raise brine shrimp.
The river behind us is infested with signal crayfish, they are destroying the native crays, but its ILLEGAL for us to take them? Go figure! I want to aquaculture some crays but the natives are protected, illegal to take stock, the signal crays are illegal and must be destroyed but we are not allowed to catch and eat them? We cant aquaculture them either as they might escape, which I dont understand cause they are already running rampant! The only ones we can keep are the 'blue lobsters' which I think are your aussie yabbies. But they are very expensive to buy....ah well, one day hey!
Oh, one day I looked up the scientific difference between a prawn and a shrimp...its really complex apparently to do with the number of wiggly bits, some shrimp are huge and some prawns are tiny, it said not to worry about it though as even the experts can get it wrong...
