I am a big fruit eater, mostly bananas (95% fruitarian). Does anyone know of any special considerations or tips when composting fruit waste? I need to stop throwing my peels away.

Hi Jeff,
Worms love banana skins.....which are high in potassium. Castings based on banana skins and other fruit wastes would be a superb plant food. If you don't have one already, set yourself up a worm farm.

Hi jobney,
I have access to large volumes of both fruit and veggies for my compost here. I hit the produce markets early in the morning while they are prepping to display and sell. Along with bags of veggie trimmings, often, I will run across Pineapple trimmings, as well as old bananas, mangoes and any number of fruits that can't be sold.
In my opinion, they almost all compost well and the fruit (particularly the pineapple) gets quite hot in the pile which I really like. That said, I do limit the fruit, as the the significant downside is that even when buried in the pile, the darn flies and bugs always seem to sniff out the fruit. I also tend to go a little heavier on the leaves when layering in fruit.
