Hi,

Basically I started this thread to have a central space to gather my thoughts about whether or not to set up an AP system and if I do, which way to go.

I am very much attracted to the concept of AP, but I have several concerns, which I would like to address in this thread. This allows all of you to be partial to my musings (oh, joy!) and to comment if you like.

concerns:
- start up cost e.g. buying/making the FT and GB
- running costs e.g. electricity for pumps and heating and perhpas lighting
- where would I best locate the system in house, greenhouse or garden
- what would be good choice fish for location I choose in the end
- what AP system would be most suitable, from which components (can't get an IBC inside my already built greenhouse, for example)
- is AP the way to go, or should I go for vermiponics

I'll just add new posts to this thread when new thoughts and, hopefully, insights pop up in my head. If this is not the proper place for this type of thread, please let me know. I can always move or take my notes off-forum. Just thought someone else might benefit later from my plans and later the execution of those plans.

if you've taken the time to read all this: thank you

Substrate Continuous Flow. Good or bad idea?

I have a fair number of 55 gallon plastic barrels that I picked up cheap. I've been playing with different styles of systems to see what works best for me. I have one two barrel system that I just couldn't get the auto siphons to work right so I decided just to cut the stand pipe a bit smaller and put it on a timer. I discovered today that the pump is a little under sized and combining that with the diameter of the stand pipe, I wasn't able to the the fill depth as high as I wanted. On the other hand, it seems to look great as a continuous flow. I've never tried that before so I have a couple questions. 1. Will the continuous flow allow enough oxygen to the plant roots. My gut tells me yes because the drain is moving along at a pretty good clip so I'm turning the water over about 1.5 times per hour. 2. On a related note, will worms thrive in a substrate continuous flow. Again, my instincts tell me that if there's good oxygen they would be fine. I'd like some other opinions, though. If it's a bad idea, I could stick a bigger pump on it. I have some larger ones. All input welcome.

Gave a final push yesterday, been a lot of distractions in the Bio-digestion and Mushroom department, and am very exited at the result. System is very simple, pond is 6mx1mx1m and cycles 125L every 15min so thats about 12 000L in 24 hours.
Will be picking up the Trout in a couple of hours.

I decided to experiment on a small scale AQP before going full hippie. This way I can get a good feel for what I may expect before I begin implementing an AQP on system. So far, I am only working on pumping water and removing solids from scale model FT. The SLO has already tripped me up. I searched through the forum and found some good things, but not getting the same results. I also felt like a dedicated thread on this subject would be helpful. So the general question here is what works in the world of SLOs. Broken down questions include:

1. I read about negative pressure in the SLO, is this achievable or is it voodoo?
2. Does the pump feed from the ST to the FT need to have sufficient pressure to churn the water to keep solids moving?
3. What about the size of the SLO pipe; what is the optimal size?
4. Can you really get all the solids out with a flat base on your FT or should you angle it so solids settle towards your SLO?
5. Can you really get an SLO to move solids up a pipe the depth of an IBC container, or is this voodoo?

Maybe that's enough for a start. I will add a message in this thread about my experiments to give context to my volume of questions.

Should I apologize about using the term voodoo in the manner I have? For all I know a practitioner may be on this forum and thus offended. You never know.

Hi.
I got a red eared slider called Doris.
About two months a go I installed first set of capsicum plants on top of her kingdom. It was quite easy task because I all ready had hydro setup on top of the tank. So just some new plumbing and there we go.
Plants seem to like the conditions just little over dose of nitrogen at first. so I decided to expand the system.

Can anyone tell me when a system is balanced? Is it when the system has cycled and all the Ammonia, PH, Nitrate, and Nitrite levels are in the safe or i proper ranges? Are these ranges achieved prior to putting in plants? If so when you add plants don't the readings change? I apologize this is a lot of questions to ask. Thanks Tom
