So here's a question I have for everybody: for those of you only doing AP on a small scale at home, do you also breed your fish and raise your own fish eggs in a nursery? Obviously it has a lot to do with the amount of space one has, but on that scale is it more cost-effective and time-saving to keep buying new fingerlings from suppliers when you're ready to start a new batch, or is it worthwhile having another small system (like one with a MacDonald jar) to raise your own fish from eggs harvested from breeders? I suppose you might also need another separate system for the breeders as well. What say you?

I thought it would be helpful for folks to discuss alternative feed for fish, especially since for myself a big part of implementing AP is to become more self-sustainable. In another thread I shared an idea that was presented to me recently by a fellow attendee at the UVI Aquaponics course last week. He said that he knew someone who had access to a chicken farm where they would give him the rejected eggs for free, which he then partially baked along with some vegetable matter to produce a high-protein fish feed. What are you opinions on this method? If you were growing duckweed and also were raising chickens, you probably have the ingredients right there to make a feed... would something like that be feasible? Has anybody done this already? Please share your ideas with regards to this and any other alternative fish feeds you might have heard of or currently employ.

I decided to experiment on a small scale AQP before going full hippie. This way I can get a good feel for what I may expect before I begin...

I decided to experiment on a small scale AQP before going full hippie. This way I can get a good feel for what I may expect before I begin implementing an AQP on system. So far, I am only working on pumping water and removing solids from scale model FT. The SLO has already tripped me up. I searched through the forum and found some good things, but not getting the same results. I also felt like a dedicated thread on this subject would be helpful. So the general question here is what works in the world of SLOs. Broken down questions include:

1. I read about negative pressure in the SLO, is this achievable or is it voodoo?
2. Does the pump feed from the ST to the FT need to have sufficient pressure to churn the water to keep solids moving?
3. What about the size of the SLO pipe; what is the optimal size?
4. Can you really get all the solids out with a flat base on your FT or should you angle it so solids settle towards your SLO?
5. Can you really get an SLO to move solids up a pipe the depth of an IBC container, or is this voodoo?

Maybe that's enough for a start. I will add a message in this thread about my experiments to give context to my volume of questions.

Should I apologize about using the term voodoo in the manner I have? For all I know a practitioner may be on this forum and thus offended. You never know.

Many thanks to Journeyman who has come to the rescue with a backup till I get a new one. (many, many thanks, Mark I would have been stuffed without it)

So does anyone have a good link or supplier that sells a air pump capable of say 800 to 1000 LPH? Also one that doesn't mind being in the outdoors.

Hi,

APHQ member Luke Boshier has suggested that we should operate a vegetable seed exchange.

I think it's a great idea but I know little to nothing about the regulatory framework that is almost certain to attend something like trading in seeds - particularly across state and international borders.

Anyone know their way around this area?

Greetings from Germany (Dutch border). Just introducing myself arfter 'lurking' for a few days.

I'm actually a regular gardener. Got myself a few autpot pots and have been interested in aquaponics for a while. Recently got a book about it and have been reading on the internet.

My main concern would be that the output in fish and veg wouldn't justify the energy to keep the system warm enough to function. We have our spring season now and we still have 15 Celcius during the day. I do have a polycarbonate greenhouse but keeping everything around 20 Celcius ... I can't guess how much electricity that would cost, frankly.

There is the cellar, which never gets truly cold, but then again it doesn't really get warm either, so the system would have to be heated constantly. Also there is no natural light there... It just doesn't seem economically viable to me.

So if there are people from my part of the world who can comment on this concern, I'd be grateful.

And for the rest I'll continue to read forum threads and see how other people have set up their systems.

As winter starts to set in its time to think about a winter grain. Just below my Terraquaponics system are three fields that enjoy the residual nutrient enriched water from the through flow system, i control flood at will. The pigs have cleaned up the land and i received some Spelt seed from two German students that spent four months with us writing their Thesis last year.
It looks very nutritious and quite hardy apparently was very popular during Medieval times. Thinking of planting some beans in between them, maybe some beets to boot!

Pumping Problem with Jebao CM 10000l/h Pump

Hi to all,

Hi to all,

I have just bought and connected the Jebao 10,000l/h pump. The pump is not pumping 10,000l/h, flow rate is more like 4 to 5,000l/h.

I am hoping you guys can spot what I have done wrong.

Pump outlet size is 1/1/4" and is connected via a flexible hose to 1" PVC pipe which takes the water to the tanks. The flow chart on the pump shows that at the head height I am using I should be getting at least 8,000l/h.

The previous pump was 4.700l/h and connected direct to the 1" PVC pipe and was pumping 3,000 to 3,500l/h no problem.

If I disconnect the 1" PVC and time the flow from the flexible 1 1/4" it seems to be around the 8 to 9,000l/h

So the question, why is the new 10,000l/h pump only working at half the capacity when I connect the 1 1/4" flexible hose to the 1" PVC Pipe?

Thanks for the help.

Hi all I am in Central Victoria. Presently growing the following;

1 Basil = not doing so well. Black around base of stem, leaves dropping off and are black at the ends?

2 Vietnamese Mint = not growing, dormant (due to weather no doubt)

3 Cabbage = Growing really well, overnight even, but some leaves do have holes were something is eating them

4 Boc Chai = growing extremely well

5 spring onions = seem to be doing well

6 celery = id say dormant but green and healthy looking (Two plants are yellowish)

7 silver beet = growing oak, but a little slow Looks ok

8 coloured peppers = seem to be just fine

so id have to say so far those that appear truly happy with our climate are the cabbages and spring onions and boc chai. But I would have thought the basil would have done better and how do I treat whatever is eating some of my plants

Howdy fellow Aquapons!
I am Don Stark,
Striving to integrate sound permaculture and Organic and just good food principles into my AP system. This has been a four year experiment thus far, and seem to be learning all the time.
Our system was developed with the intention of developing a commercial growing operation that can operate all year. The decision was made up front to develop scalable systems that were appropriate for our climate and conditions. Since we get less sunlight than most of the world and more rain, it was not appropriate to mimic a system that had more sun. Thus the learning curve of a pioneer system. Along the way we have learned and met many very enthusiastic and well intentioned folk who are on the same path.
We have integrated six growing method, Media Bed with flood and drain, Wicking Beds in Coco Coir, A DWC Raft system, NFT, Vertical towers and a Fodder system for the chickens and Hogs.
We have had the privilege of hosting tours to our location from South America and five states in the US, If you are nearby come on over and we can learn together how to make our food systems better
I am first a Student and always willing to share what we have learned.
