How have people found the Eel Tailed catfish (Tandanus tandanus) go in an AP system? From his post on sleepy cod I see Jonty has 21, anyone else raising them?

The Urban AP Manual mentions they are good in ponds, do they also do well in a recirculated system? Are they a long grow out? I Presume their temp requirements are similar to the Murray cods?

I have fond memories of eating ones caught from the Murray as a Kid (lets say 35ys ago  ) Half the excitement was catching such a great looking fish but I remember yumming them down as well. Would love to raise some.

BTW I presume it is normal to start salivating when considering the fish you could raise. :D If it isn't I may need to go see a doctor as I'm close to need ing a bib to wear while reading the forums! :p

I have about 35 scattered around in my various tanks and they are going well. I have them in there to clean up the bottom of the tanks. They appear to be very happy.
I know that Melbourne Aquaponics has them in his tanks as well.

Ok will they thin the ranks of other fish that they are in with? Say with Trout or Silvers?

They do not appear to be bothered by Silvers, Jades or Sleepies....at this stage anyway.

From what I have read, eel tailed catfish and murray cod are supposed to do well together (polyculture). Not game to put my small catfish in with the larger cod for fear of losing them. I have no idea of what the growout timeframe is but looking at their growth rate I would hazard a guess of 2 years.

Catfish are great. I've got 50 ish and they grow faster than silvers. So far they behave themselves in with goldies and silvers.

What water temps do they tolerate/thrive at?

In the wild they co-habit the same waterways as jades, silvers, murray cod - namely the Murray-Darling river system, so they should survive the same temps. I netted 3 jades yesterday for scientific studies (in a pan of course:D), a couple of the catfish were also caught. They are growing well, around 130mm in length and nice and fat.

The temps here are around 7-8 at night, daytime around 20-22, so as the weather continues to cool I will keep an eye on them to see how they fare.
