I harvested the first two Tilapia from my AP system a few days ago. The two biggest fish in the tank. They were about 1.5 kg I would guess, although I didn't weigh them.

I deep fried them in a beer batter and we had them as fish and chips for lunch. The kids and I enjoyed the fish. My wife declined to try them as she somehow thinks she doesn't want to eat "my pets" .... her problem, not mine.

I have fished since I was a little kid and my Dad taught me how to kill the fish I caught and clean them. He also taught me to throw back the ones that were too small or couldn't be eaten and how to dispatch a fish quickly without causing it to suffer.

We will probably need to eat at least two fish a week from now on as the Tilapia are nearly all over half a kilo or more and there are at least 100 - 150 fish in my 1000 litre tank. including 50 Barramundi, that are growing fast.

We have also been enjoying lots of basil, tomatoes and snap beans.

The hardest part of AP here in the tropics seems to be getting seeds to germinate. With the exception of the crops I have mentioned, a lot of other seed that I plant just doesn't appear or doesn't survive the heat.

I do a daily composting and most of what I plant now in the AP, I have retrieved from the compost ..... tomato seedlings, cucumber etc. stuff that germinates easily in the heat and humidity.

Its amazing how seedlings can sprout in a compost heap and look so vigorous and healthy. It doesn't matter where you get them from as long as they grow.

What did your Tilapia taste like Dave? I was waiting for you to pass judgement and tell us what they tasted like?
Also, how are you Barramundi going? Have any eaten one another yet?

The Tilapia were delicious. Plenty of white flesh, firm and flaky, very few bones to deal with (my 11 year old daughter liked this) and not too fishy in flavour . . . I think I do prefer Barramundi but the Tilapia are by no means a rubbish fish as someone told me here ... the point being that they are so easily available the fish goes for about $ 3.00 a kilo in the market as apposed to $ 15/kilo for Barra.

The Barramundi have entered a new morph stage, they are losing their stripes and becoming lighter and plainer in colour. they have more than doubled in size in a few weeks.

Seeds sprout in the worm bin as well. Good idea to transplant them.
