I am in the process of setting up a small 20 gal / 75l system, and there really isn't any food fish that I can stock in the tank. I'm wondering if anyone has had success with shrimps and prawns in aquaponics? I know you can stock a very dense shrimp tank, which presumably can produce the nitrate level needed for aquaponics purposes.
Thanks, any info would be appreciated.

This company Rocky Point Prawns (http://www.rockypointprawns.com/ordering1.htm) will send them to you live, green or cooked! :) You can buy them by the species, size and weight if desired!
They are in Queensland. Google Prawn Hatchery Victoria might yield something closer to home.

Wlai, did you ever create that shrimp based system. I have been reading about a strain of freshwater prawn, Malaysian Tiger Prawn. They seem to adapt well to pond culture and in my mind a pond is nothing more than an overgrown fish tank. I haven't done a lot of research on shrimp but She Who Must Be Obeyed really does like them. Some types of prawn/shrimp critters are territorial and can be cannibalistic to protect their territory. I would like to learn more. Any references anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

I have considered the same thing, especially since you can buy them 60-90 days old and only need to grow them 2-4 months to get them harvest size. Information of one source in the US can be found here (http://www.aquacultureoftexas.com/)

I currently have Macrobrachium Rosenbergii under my floating raft growbed. They seem to grow well in aquaponics system. Problem is that they try to eat each other when moulting, that is even when food is abundant. I started with 200pcs in 2 square meter growbed. My estimate now is under 100 pcs.
