hi all have just made a auto siphon, but think I may have the wrong pipe dimentions, which are stand pipe 20mm next pipe the one which breakes the suction 50mm, and the cover is 90mm.
it does work to a degree, once it siphons it wont break suction, unless I reduce the pump delivery pipe pressure by closing the tap, and visa versa any help would be much appriciated.

Have you got a small (6mm) diameter "air break tube" that feeds to the top of your 50mm diameter bell tube? If not, you will experience what you are experiencing.

thanks for replying Ian, have changed the air line to 10mm, it is now working fine. I pulled every thing apart and discovered expandered clay balls stuck in my stand pipe, I MADE THE HOLES IN THE OUTER CASING TO BIG which let through smaller clay balls, have now wound gause around it and is working fine.
I have been into hydroponics for a while now, and I find the concentrate is getting to expensive to buy, stumbled across this website last week so thought I would trial it, and if it works ok will migrate to aquaponics, my trial setup is a 60 ltr rubbish bin with a 20 ltr tote on top and 8 bok choy with 6 goldfish. If this goes well Murray can expect an order.:)

You may need to punch the holes in the gauze out a bit, it gets blocked up with cr@p pretty quickly.

Yes have thought of that and already have clay balls back in fish tank, so gause must have broken already, will take cover out and construct a new one thanks outbackozzie, by the way do they still make hannens beer there cheers:)

No Hannans Beer made here anymore, but as always there is talk of someone making it again.
Oh, and the siphon dimensions for my 100l barrels:
6mm Siphon Breaking Breather
13mm Inner Pipe
40mm Outer Pipe
90mm Guard with grinder slots cut in it.
You can sorta see it in the background of this photo:

OBO,
Show-off!
Chobbzy, Take no notice of that beautifully conditioned, 819gm, introduced, freshwater, sport fish getting in the road of the real subject matter.
Come on now OBO, that's not a "truthfull" way to depict an Auto-Siphon, but then I must admit you have always seemed to be humble, unassuming, modest and a very quiet achiever!;)
Love your style, Cheers Ian K.

Lol, I went through about 20 pages of photos, and thats the only one that has the breather tube in the siphon outer. The trout just happened to be there :P

thanks guys, gee amazing there seems to be 100 ways to do the same job, grinder would never of thought of that, I like the idea of the siphon breaking tube being at the top, you should be able to set where the water rises to that way, good idea OBO am going to put another small system beside my first one, and see how celery goes in it.
P.S. sorry for my long delay at getting back as I am a long distance truck driver and am away from home for a while at times great fish. have been in touch with the DPI ( department of primary industry ) here in NSW just to be sure I dont need a permit to do this stuff, its ok, but to cold here for jade perch, so eventually will stick with silver perch. Here is a web site in the states they gave me to look at.
cheers chobbzy;)

After seeing your pic of the system you have, I'm jealous ;) ..... All the money I've spent putting this cheezy thing together that I'm planning to use, and I could already have one up and running :slaps forehead: :mad:
Thanks for the pic .... As soon as I can get my cheese-ball one up and running, I'll be changing over to one similar to that! The one I already have started, will just be an extension to the newer one. Now I just have to figure out how to make one of them siphon breaks ..... I know I bookmarked one here somewhere's ..........
I have to do everything inside if I want to do it year round - it's still snowing here in Montana, so one similar to yours will fit my needs ..... Thanks again!

Chobbzy,
I am also a convert to AP from Hydro. I would never go back to using nutrient, mixing fertilisers, watching root systems eaten away by chemicals and pH swings etc.
I have several AP systems up and running for about 18 months now and very few of the issues expereinced with Hydro. I rarely check anything (pH, Ammonia etc.) I have hundreds of Tilapia and a dozen or so Koi. Over the last year I probably have lost about 10 fish only. Some through natural causes.
Once you are set up and know how to keep an eye on things, AP is very low maintenence, unlike Hydro, from my exp.
This forum has helped me so much and the regular members are really supportive and their advice has been much appreciated.
Good luck with your AP adventure.

thanks dave, have only been doing this for a week,:) maybe should have waited longer before I put fish into the system, reading elswhere it can take about 8 weeks to cycle the system. But being me I just have to have something up and running NOW, its a trait that Ive never been able to get rid of:rolleyes:. You are right about everybody here they are very friendly, and the imformation here is just great.
all the best cliff
