Greetings Forum Members,
Would anyone have any experience in using fish waste products in the manufacture of biogas/methane.I would ideally like to talk to someone who is presently doing it or has done it in the past.
My pvt. e-mail is: aquaponicsafrica@zulucom.net
Many thanks Ken Konschel.

Hi Ken,

While I don't have specific experience in the bio-digestion of fish wastes, I worked many years ago as a wastewater treatment operator (and I have an ongoing interest in small bio-digesters) so I have a sound understanding of how they work.

When you refer to fish wastes are you talking about fish faeces or the waste products of fish processing like scales, guts and heads? What number of fish (and what species) do you have? What is the proximity of your facility to other houses?

The regulatory climate in your area will also impact what your bio-digester design looks like. The outlook of local health authorities will determine whether you will need displacement digesters like those pioneered by L. John Fry (expensive to set up) of those used by Vietnamese farmers (much less expensive to set up).

Bio-digesters work best with regular loading of material of a consistent carbon/nitrogen ratio.

If you can tell me a little more about your operation, I will be in a better position to advise you.
