Hello all - I introduced myself on the introduction board a few weeks back and here I am again! Been a busy time trying to get everything together to get the aquaponics project up and running for my class. My students will be raising fish and growing various vegetables with the intent of giving the produce to a local soup kitchen. So, that's what's going on in brief. My current problem is obtaining the fish!

I would like to use bluegills, yellow perch, bass or something of the like. The problem is that this time of year stocking companies around me that I have been able to find all use ponds and lakes that are frozen. I'm having trouble finding anyone around the Baltimore, Maryland area (within a few hrs. drive) with an indoor hatchery operation. Most of what I have found is down south and the overnight shipping for the small quantity I'm looking for (around 30 to 40) is out of my budget for this project.

Long story short, does anyone know of any sources around this area or sources that ship for under $140 (estimates from down south I have gotten). I am hoping to make this happen for my students. If it comes to it we'll use ornamental fish but I'd rather not. Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered. Oh and you can reply here but I will see it much quicker if you don't mind sending a message to my email scottderby@gmail.com Thanks!

Hello Scott,

Welcome aboard (again)! I could get you tilapia that would fit within your budget requirements, no problem. I also usually have a limited number of BG and YP available in the Spring, but I haven't decided yet if I'll be shipping them next year. They are a bit more difficult to ship than tilapia unfortunately.
