Just bought a fowlers vacola preserving unit on eBay (I bought a fowlers dehydrator the other night LOL) my other-half thinks I'm jumping the gun, I'm sure of it, but he smiles and nods anyway...

Now to get my hands on some jars.

Oh, and grow some tomatoes.

But thats a given... right? RIGHT? LOL

You beat me to it - I want to learn preserving too - what did you pay for the unit and what did you get?

Here's the link... they probably go for cheaper or around the same price online but it was a spur of the moment thing. :D

Mum has a stove top one she was going to lend to me but this one has a thermostat and only takes an hour.

The only drawback to this one is that it takes only the smaller jars and bottles (not the big 1litre) ones that the stove top unit will tak) but there are only two of us here so the smaller unit will do just nicely.

I have a heap of double and triple graft fruit trees on espalier outside and since they are coming into their third year, they are about to boom (if the blossoms are anything to go by). Last year we covered them in bird mesh so the bower birds and parrots shouldn't get the fruit first!

The sneaky buggers always wait until a day before you plan to harvest the friuit before cleaning it all up themselves!

I hope so! :)

I also bought the vacola dehydrator... my partner wasn't very impressed until I found out you can make twiggy sticks in it! LOL... darned carnivores.

I have one of the kids at school collecting PVC pipes from their dad (plumber) for the yabby tank so things are coming together. I guess I'll be buying some fruit tonight (none on our trees yet of course) to dehydrate and pay that family off for the PVC. They'll also get some free range eggs. LOVE the barter thing! :D

Now I just need to hit the op shop and see if there are any jars/old ladies who don't want their jars anymore. :D

Go on Hamish... buy one, you know you want to!
