Hi guys,

every since i meet gary a few weeks back the idea of aquaponics has mad a lot of sense seeing i have all sorts of problems trying to grow anything in my yard with my dogs. I've been a keen fish keeper in the past and went more towards keeping reptiles as I got older, I'm interested in trying turtle aquaponics because i know turtes are very messy animals, the idea would be to set up a tank with some sort of level where they can get out of the tank to a sandy area to breed. not sure if it would work with only a few turtles but would like to try it sometime.

cheers,

matt

I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only thing I think you may run into is their slow growth. If the only goal was to raise vegetables they would be fine. Box turtles may be a good starting point.

I'm kinda thinking along the lines of keeping two tank setup because I really do want some perch in my backyard so I will most likely buy one setup this year so I can put fish into it then a few years down the track get another setup when my turtles get bigger and have to move outside. The only thing that is more of a concern is if they are going to produce enough waste for the system, maybe i should buy few more turtles. Also thinking if i get a few more turtles I may be able to breed them and make some money out of the system aswell

You need a license to keep turtles in QLD and a whole pile more licenses to sell them. See
