IBC tanks

Hi,

I am thinking of buying a recycled IBC tank to modify as a fish tank (they are white plastic tanks, usually 1m X 1m X 1m, encased in a wire cage, used to transport liquids) Has anyone had any experience with those? I can buy them as 'food grade' or cheaper 'non food grade'. My question would be whether it would be enough to wash out a non food grade tank thoroughly and if the fish can handle it. This applies to any recycled containers, i suppose.

Hi,

The main concern with IBC's is what they had in them before you got hold of them. The identification plate may not be the full story.

The other concern that I have is that they will, over time, deteriorate in the sun and that the height of them is not entirely conducive to gravity feeding from grow beds. The other thing is that an IBC will always look like an IBC.

Having said that, lots of people do use them as fish tanks. Aside from issue of their previous contents, price is probably the principal factor when considering their use. Recently, they have been escalating in price.

We use one to catch rainwater for our fish tank and growing systems.

I hadn't thought about the UV deterioration issue. And its true about the price escalation, you can't seem to get one below $230 here in Melbourne. I'll keep looking !

Hi first post i use 2 ibc from a chemecal plant just washed out with bleach my system has been running just on 12 months no problems [had one crash un related chemical from weed spraying ]

Hi,

I've watched the development of FoodFish' system over a period of several months.....it is made entirely of recycled materials.....and it is an excellent example of what one can achieve using such materials.

just taking a close look at your photo.
I imagine the grow bed is to the right and above the tanks. I am guessing this by the grey pipe leading to the tanks.
Down in the tanks I can see what looks like red ball valves, is this the take up point for the pump that pumps to the grow bed?
Please post some photos.
