This process took me 10 months in total to aquire. That being said i learned a few things along the way.

Step 1: Call Peggy (217)785-3423 at IDNR (Illinois Department of Natural Resources) and request an application for an Aquaculture Permit.

Step 2: Build your aquaponics setup. Realize they WILL NOT give you a permit unless it is indoors. Also it must not be on a flood plane (99.9% of houses in Illinois aren't build on the flood plane). This could be in your garage, basement or sun room like myself.

Step 3: Fill out the application and send it in. If any questions call whoever they tell you to(I had to call Mark in the beginning of the process and Kyle towards the end so they must change regularly who you have to talk to with problems).

Step 4: Once they receive the permit they will send an IDNR officer out to where your aquaponic set-up is.

Step 5: Waite...I prefer the wait 2 weeks call...wait 2 weeks call method.

Step 6: Get your fish and enjoy...for any further questions feel free to e-mail me POC3442@gmail.com
