Its probably because they were large fish acclimatised to your pool so able to withstand some stress.

That algae could be controlled by some algae eating fish say 5 or 6 fish that are salt tolerant. I’m sure there is something suitable.

Algae-eating and salt tolerant fish = Gold fish.
Just need to stop feeding them, they will tear through whatever is edible in the pond.
